Light & Color
In a couple of weeks I’ll be again teaching my Basic Digital Photography class for Boise Community Education. I really enjoy helping new photographers take those beginning steps into moving from taking snapshots to making photographs. It’s really rewarding to see people grasp the basics and grow as photographers.
This session I will be adding one night, going from a three to four-session class. While the class in the past has been pretty much a lecture series with PowerPoint illustrations, I’m adding a hands-on component where the students will use the skills taught to make some photos.
I had an idea to make a simple still life using various shaped glass filled with colored water. I figured the play of light and color will teach them how to compose a shot, light it, and expose properly, plus be a little creative. I also thought it a good idea to test the concept before taking it to the students.
So… here’s my take on the subject. I took quite a few shots, explored different camera angles, and used the morning sun as my light source. These were my four favorites from the session. They are labeled with the camera settings. Though my class is an evening session and they will have to use other lighting, I’ll be interested to see what they come up with. Perhaps I’ll post a link to their shots at a later date.
