Week 28 - JuLY 14, 2013
Seeing / Making Photo Opportunities
This Project 52 seems to be having the desired effect on my growth as a photographer. It has created a discipline of taking more photos and, as with any "sport", practice is what it takes to improve. It also has me looking for more photo opportunities. Sometimes it's simply the result of looking more at the sights and opportunities that are out there. Other times it's exploring new photo ideas, sometimes trying unexplored techniques. This week, the photos represent both methods and are quite diverse.
I mentioned last week that I'd enjoyed playing with the sparklers and the photos I was able to create with them. I looked a bit more on the web and came up with this idea, using what looks like a drink in a festive environment. The glass, the liquid, and the sparks make for interesting light. The only light in these photos is that the sparkler created. Looking at this, I'm inclined to think this is an idea perhaps more well-suited for New Years Eve photos instead of the middle of July, but hey, I had the left-over sparklers and so gave it a try now. The other photos are the result of noting an interesting wheat field not far from the house when out on a motorcycle ride one evening. I made a mental note to go back with the camera one evening when the setting sun and clouds might make for a shot. This past week we had some summer squalls forming and so I took the camera out and waited. I could see the rain off in the distance and got this first shot as the sun was setting and the clouds lowering with rain off in the distance. Soon after the shot, I had to dash for the pickup so as not to get drenched by the little cloudburst. It lasted all of about 10 minutes and then cleared, which is when I went back and made the second shot. Some extra creativity with Lightroom and well... here ya go.
I've been enjoying my weekly project, learning more about photography in general, picked up some new techniques, and found it a great way to dive deeper into Lightroom and other post-processing tools. Fun and learning too... I'll drink to that! Cheers!
