True Colors
Those who study the science behind why leaves change color in the fall tell us that the leaves actually have the colors we begin to see present all the time, but that the chorophyll that is so prevalent during the growing season masks these other colors and so we only see the green during that time. There are other reasons too, (which you can hear about in this video clip), but whatever the science behind it, it is the art that catches this photographer's eye. Autumn is hands-down my favorite season, because of the cooler days, of course the magnificent autumn colors, and a whole pile of childhood memories that just have always made this a magic time of year.
A couple of years after I moved into this house in Meridian where I'm living now I planted a red maple in the back yard. It was probably 10 feet tall at the time. Now, about 15 years later that tree is over 40 feet tall. In the autumn, it seems to have a central area that starts to turn red and over the weeks of autumn, that spreads to the whole tree. Of course during the progression, all kinds of colors and patterns emerge, each section of the tree a little different. All the leaf photos here are from that same tree. (All too soon they will be a pile on the ground, giving me plenty of raking to do!)
I was also out with the camera during sunset on evening and so the other two shots were just things that caught my eye at a local park. Autumn doesn't last nearly long enough for my liking and I'll need to make it a point to get out in the evenings to enjoy it during these next few weeks. Enjoy the slideshow!
